Delta State Governor, Ifeanyi Okowa, yesterday approved 61 projects for the state to meet the critical needs of the people in hospital and health centres across the three senatorial districts of the state.

They include the procurement of medical equipment for the Dialysis Centre at the Central Hospital, Warri, Warri South Local Government Area; the reconstruction of the failed portion of the perimeter block wall fence at the General Hospital, Koko, Warri North Local Government Area and the procurement of medical equipment for Primary Healthcare Centre, Umuagu in Oshimili South Local Government Area.

Other were the financial support for the state Neglected Tropical Disease (NTD) and Malaria Programme; the renovation of the Primary Healthcare Centre at Ada-Irri in Isoko South Local Government Area; the renovation and rehabilitation of the General Hospital at Bomadi (Group B) in Bomadi Local Government Area; the implementation of the preventive and control mechanisms of monkey pix disease in the state; the rehabilitation of facilities at the Cottage Hospital, Ogriagbene in Bomadi Local Government Area and 45 other projects.

The Commissioner for Health in the state, Dr. Mordi Ononye, supported by his counterparts in Lands and Survey and Information, Hon. Chika Ossai and Patrick Ukah, during the yearly ministerial briefing in Asaba yesterday, said 31 projects, including programmes were at various stages of completion.

He said: “The Inspectorate Unit of the Ministry of Health has inspected 115 health facilities; some of the facilities were visited more than two times before recommendation for approval was made. At least 61 facilities were issued new certificates while 15 others had their certificates revalidated.”

He said two health facilities, including the Josi-Chibu Clinic and Maternity Home in Ekuku-Agbor and the De-Hope Clinic in Umutu, were shut down on account of being operated by quacks, even as a fake Doctor at the Primary Health Centre at Egorde, evaded arrest.

He hailed Governor Okowa for taken delivery of the Doctors and Nurses Quarters at the Government Hospital, Ofagbe in Isoko and supplied 10,000 mama kits to secondary health facilities across the state, before installing one 500KVA, 33/0.415KV transformers each to Central Hospital’s substations at Kwale, Owe, Oleh, Ughelli, Sapele, Agbor and Warri.
