Policeman, civilian killed in Ekiti bank robbery

A policeman and another person were yesterday killed when armed robbers stormed a bank at Ilawe-Ekiti in Ekiti South-West Local Government Area.

The policeman, whose identity was yet to be ascertained as at press time, was in mufti. He was said to be an orderly attached to one of the local government chairmen in the state, and had gone to the bank for a transaction when the robbers came.

A source in the town told journalists in a telephone interview that the bandits swooped on the old generation bank located beside the palace of the monarch of the town, chattering the security entrance with dynamite, which gave them access into the bank.

The source explained the robbers, who might have entered the town through the Igede Road about 3.56p.m., shot sporadically into the air, causing marketers and residents to scamper into safety, leaving the Central Area of the town deserted within minutes.

“They just came suddenly and started shooting. Those who had shops around that axis had to scamper into safety. Residents ran inside their houses, because the shooting was too much.

“After blasting the security door, they went into the banking hall and seized the staff and the customers. They made away with undisclosed amount of money. They later escaped from the town via Ilawe-Igbara Odo- Ogotun Road,” the source said.
