Police deploy 16 gunboats, 6,000 personnel in Bayelsa waterways

The police in Bayelsa have deployed 16 gunboats and 6,000 armed personnel in the creeks and waterways in the state.

The Commissioner of Police, Bayelsa State Command, Mr. Asuquo Amba, disclosed this in Yenagoa on Saturday during a visit by members of the state chapter of the Civil Liberties Organisation led by its Chairman, Chief Nengi James.

Amba said the 6,000 officers were undergoing marine training, adding that the intelligence gathered by the police showed that waterways in Delta and Rivers had been calm due to synergy among the state commands.

He, however, said there were still some issues with sea piracy in the state, vowing that the police would severely deal with sea pirates operating in the state waterways.

Amba said out of the 16 gunboats, 14 were donated by the Bayelsa State Government while two were donated by the police zonal command.

Speaking on prison congestion and recent cell break in the state anti-robbery squad office, Amba blamed the development on the poor state of police cells and the slow judicial system.

Amba said, “Most police cells are not good in Bayelsa. Also, the slow process of the Bayelsa judiciary is not helping matters.’’

In his presentation, James, commended the Bayelsa Police Command for the recent successes recorded in the state.
