Mi Gente Dethrones ‘Despacito’ at No. 1 on Hot Latin Songs Chart

J Balvin and Willy William’s “Mi Gente,” now featuring Beyoncé, tops the Hot Latin Songs chart for the first time, ascending 2-1 on the chart dated Oct. 21.

It moves to No. 1 in its 14th chart week, dethroning Luis Fonsi and Daddy Yankee’s “Despacito,” featuring Justin Bieber, after 35 consecutive weeks at No. 1. For Balvin, it’s his fourth leader on the chart, while it’s the first for both William and Beyoncé.

“Mi Gente” had been stuck at No. 2, behind “Despacito,” for the past 11 weeks. Thanks to “Mi Gente’s” new remix boasting Beyoncé, the song earns the chart’s Greatest Gainer awards for digital song sales, airplay and streaming.

It hikes 2-1 on the Latin Digital Song Sales chart (79,000 sold in the week ending Oct. 5, according to Nielsen Music; up 436 percent, with 87 percent of its sales from its new remix) and 2-1 on the Latin Streaming Songs chart (28.7 million, up 50 percent). It also climbs 32-29 on the all-format Radio Songs chart (46 million in audience impressions, up 18 percent) and 2-1 on the Latin Airplay chart.

“Despacito” continues to have the second-most weeks at No. 1 on the Hot Latin Songs chart, trailing the 41 weeks at No. 1 by Enrique Iglesias’ “Bailando,” featuring Descemer Bueno and Gente De Zona. “Despacito” could return to No. 1 in the coming weeks, as the excitement around the Beyoncé-assisted remix of “Mi Gente” dissipates.
