The Ondo State Police Command has arrested the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) official who killed a passenger on a motorcycle on Tuesday.
The NSCDC official identified as Ifeoluwa was arrested after a violent protest by members of the Association of Commercial Motorcycle Riders (ACOMORON)
Ifeoluwa was alleged to have hit one of the deceased, Lasisi Yakubu with his car in an accident which occurred on Tuesday.
Yakubu and two other persons were said to be on a motorcycle but he died some hours after the accident.
The death of Yakubu reportedly caused a protest in some areas of Akure by some youths of the town.
During the protest, a woman was allegedly shot dead by a yet to be identified NSCDC man.
The Public Relations Officer of the police command, Mr. Femi Joseph, who spoke with reporters confirmed the arrest and stated that the suspect has been cooperating with the police while investigation was still ongoing on the matter.
His words ”I can confirm that the NSCDC officer, who involved in the accident has been arrested and he is with us. We have begun an investigation about the death of the second person. ”
Also, the Public Relations Officer of the State Command of the NSCDC, Mr. Oladapo Samuel in a statement, insisted that no officer of the corps involved in the killings of the deceased as alleged.
He said the protesters were aiming at setting up the headquarters of the command ablaze but the officers resisted them.
His words ” Intelligence information reaching us revealed that the hoodlums ( protesters) were coming to destroy and set ablaze the premises of our state command headquarters. Immediately, our officers were mobilized to secure the entrances of our office and the government house.
” It was not an official vehicle of the command that was involved in the said accident and no officer of the corps was involved in the shooting of any civilian. ”
